Smoke Alarm & Smoke Detector Installation, Maintenance & Repair Basics

Smoke detectors save lives ONLY if they are working properly!

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors installed by a licensed electrician in Frisco, Texas and, more importantly, properly maintained every month are essential to successfully reduce the likelihood of serious injury and/or death in the event of a house fire. Properly functioning smoke detectors increase your chance of surviving a house fire by more than 50%.

Source: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

According to NFPA data for 2007-2011, smoke detectors provided warning in half of all residential fires reported.  Three out of five deaths caused by fire in residences occurred in homes that did not have a smoke detector or the smoke detector did not work properly.

Smoke detectors that are not receiving adequate power will not function in the event of a fire.

Battery powered smoke detectors are most easily installed however, they are most likely to fail due to faulty or dead batteries.  Hardwired smoke detectors are connected directly to your home's electrical system and use batteries as a backup power source during power outages.

All smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be tested monthly to make sure they are working properly.

If you have a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector or combination unit that does not pass a monthly test, the unit should be replaced immediately.

Batteries in all types of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced twice a year.

An easy way to remember to do this is to change your batteries when you change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time—when you "spring forward" and "fall back."

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have a maximum life span of seven to ten years and should be replaced with new units even if they pass monthly tests.

Do I Need To Replace My Smoke Detector? If you are not certain of the age of your smoke detectors, check the unit itself; all alarms have a manufacturer date (MFG) stamped on the underside of the unit.  Check the manufacturing date on ALL the units in your home; don't assume they were all manufactured and/or installed at the same time.

Age is not the only factor in determining when a smoke detector needs to be replaced.  Additional reasons your smoke detector needs to be replaced include the following:

Battery powered smoke detectors should be replaced with hardwired units for more reliable protection of your life and home.

The safest and easiest way to replace smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors is to call Nisat Electric; we have the knowledge and experience to ensure that you have the best protection possible!
